Tire pressure is everything
Lowering pressure lengthens the tire's footprint and keeps you on top of the sand. Many drivers use 1.0–1.5 bar depending on vehicle and load. Carry a compressor and re-inflate before returning to asphalt.
Technique
- Keep momentum — steady throttle, no sudden braking in soft sand.
- Climb dunes straight, never across the slope.
- Cross the crest slowly — you can't see what's behind it.
- Drive early morning when sand is cooler and firmer.
Go with others
Never drive the dunes alone. Travel with a second vehicle or a local guide, and tell your hotel where you're going.
Respect the area
Avoid camps, palm groves and nomad areas, and don't drive on the highest dunes where tourists walk. Many routes require a local guide.
