What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down in Merzouga

A breakdown in the desert feels alarming, but most situations around Merzouga are very solvable. What matters is staying safe and giving a mechanic the right information quickly.

1. Make the vehicle and yourself safe

Pull fully off the road if you can, switch on hazard lights and place a warning triangle behind the car. On the N13 and the Rissani road, trucks and tour vehicles drive fast — never stand between the car and traffic.

In summer, find shade and drink water. Keep the doors open for airflow rather than running the engine for air-conditioning if it is overheating.

2. Don't make it worse

  • If the temperature warning is on, switch the engine off and do not open the radiator cap while hot.
  • If the car is stuck in sand, stop spinning the wheels.
  • If there is smoke or a fuel smell, move well away from the vehicle.
  • Don't keep cranking a starter that won't turn the engine over — it drains the battery.

3. Share your exact location

Open WhatsApp, tap the attachment icon and choose Location → Share live location. A Google Maps pin works too. Landmarks like a kasbah name, a hotel, or the nearest kilometre marker also help.

4. Send photos and a short description

Tell us the vehicle make and model, what happened just before the problem, and send photos of any dashboard warning lights, leaks or damage. A 10-second video of a strange noise is often more useful than a long explanation.

5. Tell your rental company

If you drive a rental car, inform the agency. Many accept a local repair once they understand the problem — we can describe the fault to them directly if that helps.
